We are seeking an experienced and dependable Site Safety Coordinator and Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 2 to join our team. Reporting to the Site Superintendent, with a functional report to the District HSE Manager, the Site Safety Coordinator is responsible for assisting the site team by performing tasks involving construction safety and first aid on project sites to ensure smooth and safe site operations.

This position is based on site in Vancouver, B.C.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety awareness and demonstrate to their team, through day-to-day attitudes and actions, that safety performance is a high priority at Bird Construction.

  • Assist Bird project team and Trade Partners (subcontractors) in achieving compliance with Bird Policies, Health & Safety Program, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations.

  • Provide support to the Site Superintendent and project team through various visible and hands-on site safety and construction tasks.

  • Provide first aid treatment/ assessment as required and ensure first aid room is clean and stocked.

  • Through frequent formal and informal inspections, perform function and inventory check of all safety equipment as per industry standards and applicable legislation.

  • Work collaboratively with other Bird team members and Trade Partners.

  • Ensure all workers on site receive an orientation and are trained and competent to complete their task(s).

  • Assist in preparation/review of daily FLHAs for Bird forces.

  • Validate and review Trade Partner FLHA s, Safe Work Procedures etc. Provide coaching and guidance if required.

  • Review upcoming scopes of new trades. Obtain and keep on file all deliverables (information, programs, or certificates) to ensure trade is compliant with HSE requirements prior to performing work and throughout execution.

  • Attend daily planning meetings and use information gathered to steer safety efforts.

  • Develop reports, research HSE information, develop site-specific Safe Work Procedures and provide training, instruction or guidance to Bird forces.

  • Review changing site conditions/activities with Bird Project Management and evaluate for risks/opportunities which may not yet be identified. Provide input on mitigation(s) needed.

  • Interact with clients as needed to address any safety concerns.

  • Conduct weekly Toolbox Talks and participate/facilitate monthly Safety Committee Meetings.

  • Ensure that all incidents are reported, immediately addressed, and appropriately documented.

  • Investigate and complete reports on HSE related incidents.

  • Provide training to Bird forces as appropriate and coordinate required or recertification training with the Regional Safety Coordinator.

  • Occasionally liaise with WorkSafeBC officers. Attend site inspections and ensure appropriate measures are taken to meet compliance as needed.

  • Address non-compliance issues with project team and Trade Partners

  • Record and document data required for daily safety report.

  • Be familiar with current COVID-19/ Communicable Disease protocols & processes and ensure the crews are following the current provincial health guidelines.

  • Assist with labour duties and site maintenance, if and when required; and

    Perform other job site duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Certification as a Safety Professional (min. CSO required)

  • NCSO or other recognized designations considered an asset

  • Occupational First Aid Level 2 or Level 3

  • High School Diploma

  • Holds, or is working toward post-secondary certificate/diploma in OHS

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in industrial/commercial construction site safety role (on-site safety support)

  • Confined Space Entry and Rescue is an asset

  • Fall Protection Trained

  • Solid understanding and knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulation

  • Have a demonstrated passion for safety and creating a safe work environment

  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office - Word, Excel and Outlook)

  • Proven ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent written and oral/interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • The ability to handle high-pressure situations in a professional manner; take an educational approach to provide safety support to Site Superintendent and site workers

  • Have readily available transportation to job sites

  • Valid BC Driver s License and Clean Drivers Abstract

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

  • Background or Criminal Record check is required

  • The ideal candidate must be able to effectively communicate and interact with individuals at all levels of the organization, as well as with external service providers, customers, and regulatory bodies

Physical Requirements

  • Physical ability to lift to 50lbs, occasionally lift items weighing more than 50lbs with assistance

  • Stand or walk for long periods of time

  • Use arms and hands to reach for, handle or manipulate objects

  • Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds, and other objects

  • Safety equipment will be required, 6" high ankle steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, hard hat, safety vest and gloves to be provided

  • This position may require work that is scheduled overtime and weekends to meet the needs of the project.
