POSITION PURPOSE

The Senior Mechanical Engineer for this role will provide technical leadership in the Hand Towel Tissue Recycled Fiber and the site Utilities areas, which includes the wastewater processing plant/Boilers and air compressor equipment. The individual will be responsible for managing the mechanical design, development, optimization and implementation of major systems as required. Overall responsibilities include the delivery of mill asset performance objectives, delivered cost and quality of the hand Towel recycling plant and site Utilities areas. The incumbent will be located at the Loudon Mill and will report to the Fiber and Utilities Operations Team Leader.

CUSTOMERS AND CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS

Key customers include: Mill Leadership Team, Recycled Fiber and Tissue Machine Asset Teams, Operating Partners, Maintenance Partners, Mill Technical Team, Operations Specialists and Sector Leadership.

Candidates should have expertise across multiple technologies in plant environments and will have a demonstrated ability to effectively provide work direction to a broad range of team members.

PROJECT DIMENSIONS

Vary widely with assignment and typically include:

  • Project responsibility of $1 MM to $30 MM
  • Project team of three to thirty people
  • Single or multiple projects

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Candidates must possess a bachelor's or advanced degree in Engineering and/or Pulp and Paper from an accredited College or University and have a minimum of 5 years experience in a variety of technical or operational assignments. Candidates with an Associate, Bachelor, or advanced degree in a relevant scientific discipline and possessing applicable experience may also be considered. Prefer candidates with 8+ years of experience.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams to achieve project results within required timeframes.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 8+ years of experience in a variety of plant and staff assignments, including maintenance and operations.
  • Experience working across multiple manufacturing technologies, e.g. LDC, UTAD and fiber based processing experience (RF, broke, Virgin) is preferred.
  • Experience working with external technical service providers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Follows the Safety Roles and Responsibilities Matrix for Loss Prevention and Control by holding themselves and all team members accountable to its tenets.
  • Design and Development: Provides guidance in the initiation, design, optimization and development of manufacturing and supporting processes to achieve unit objectives. Specifically to include projects that achieve significant cost savings improvements (YOY).
  • Work with the team to support and drive overall business, mill, and department goals.
  • Lead mill-wide cost transformation and sustainability initiatives.
  • Lead/facilitate/support problem solving on chronic mechanical/safety issues, or large acute process related issues to determine root cause.
  • Provide functional leadership and creativity in the initiation of design, development and optimization of manufacturing equipment and processes to meet unit objectives.
  • Develop knowledge and skills so as to be recognized for expertise and functional leadership in application of engineering principles, scientific analysis and project management while providing advice and counsel to others.
  • Carry out all job responsibilities in a safe manner. Develop equipment and processes that meet safety codes, policies and guidelines. Provide leadership by example in corporate safety, quality, regulatory, product safety and sustainability. Caring for the safety and well-being of operators, maintenance and other personnel.
  • Participate in the development of others within the area of the incumbent's expertise.
