Job Overview:

General Description includes complex mechanical engineering design, analysis and development of an assigned scope of work in a Mcdermott project and/or specific complex deliverables. Work includes, among other things, conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, layouts, design calculations and specification development. Assists with training other engineers by providing instruction on new technologies and/or a specialization. Supports the development of new technologies and methods. Maintains and promotes a focus on Mcdermott end product whether engineering, fabrication or construction. Ensures effective communications among other engineering disciplines.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for engineering support of onshore facilities insulation, refractory, and fireproofing work throughout all project phases (FEED, Detail Design, Construction).
    • Creation and development of project specifications, or review/amendment of client-provided specifications.
    • Review of supplier documentation for all insulation, refractory, and fireproofing requirements, as well as providing technical direction for mediation of supplier issues such as RFIs, NCRs, etc.
    • Creation and development of insulation, refractory. and fireproofing subcontract packages, including review of technical bids, evaluation and qualification of subcontractors and applicators, etc. Provide support to subcontractors for any RFIs, NCRs, or other technical issues.
    • Provide site support on an as-needed basis for fabrication and construction issues.
  • Assist with development of budgets and schedules for scope-of-work on projects.
  • Assist Equipment and Package Requisition Engineers with insulation, refractory, and fireproofing requirements and applicability
  • Work closely with project management to align on insulation/refractory/fireproofing philosophies for the Project.

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Knowledge of insulation, refractory, and fireproofing materials and technologies commonly used in onshore applications, emerging technologies and materials, as well as testing and inspection methods.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Must be able to effectively communicate across project teams, including project management, construction management, site work teams, in-office engineering teams, international McDermott offices, clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Technical writing skills, particularly for development of specifications, reports, white papers, and articles.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards (ex. NACE/AMPP/SSPC, PIP, API, ASTM), with related certifications and coursework a plus.
  • Ability to balance several projects and areas of focus at once, and to maintain schedule deadlines.
  • Maintain steady focus on change management and scope/schedule slip.
  • Membership and participation in relevant industry organizations (NACE, SSPC, PIP, etc) is a plus.
  • Accredited engineering degree may be required by specific regions
  • Minimum 10 years of detailed mechanical engineering experience, including 10 years in the oil & gas industry
  • Detailed knowledge of design techniques, analysis methods, and detailed knowledge of the theory, content and application of standards, codes and guidelines.
  • Project coordination and execution skills
  • Minimum 10 years' demonstrable, applicable experience in Insulation, Refractory, and Fireproofing, or combination thereof for the onshore energy industry.
  • Minimum education Bachelors of Science in Mechanical or Materials Engineering.
  • Travel: up to 25% domestically and internationally

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Prefer PE certificate of registration
  • Prefer experience at site during construction and commissioning
