Description

Director of Civil Engineering

About Erthos ()

Erthos is an emerging pre-IPO solar company (YES, you will be granted pre-IPO stock options upon joining!) that was created to completely reinvent the way solar plants are developed, designed, built, and operated. Erthos is driving a complete paradigm shift to the widely accepted methodologies employed by the utility scale developers by removing all steel racking associated with PV (photovoltaic) plants, laying the solar panels directly on the earth's surface, then cleaning those panels using an autonomous cleaning robot (affectionately referred to as our "ErthBot"). Erthos is intently focused on proliferating our patented "Earth Mount Solar" technology and methodology across the globe, enabling developers to accelerate the deployment of green energy at a speed never before thought possible. We are intently focused on proliferating our patented "Earth Mount Solar" technology worldwide, and our vision is to leverage this new technology to deliver the world's lowest cost of energy.

In February of 2022, we completed our Series B financing round, led by Capricorn Investment Group.

Position Summary

***Please note that although we would ideally like this person to be located in the greater Phoenix area, this role can be a full-time remote position. There will be occasional travel involved to visit our corporate headquarters in Tempe, Arizona or various solar project sites around the continental United States. A Professional Engineer (PE) certification is required to be selected for this position, and ideally you will also have at least 8 years of civil engineering experience.***

Reporting to the Head of Solar Architecture (the equivalent of a VP of Engineering), the Director of Civil Engineering is responsible for executing the civil site assessment related to feasibility, storm water management and all technical aspects of Erthos' solar power plant engineering projects. You will be the company's subject matter expert over all civil engineering matters. You will lead civil engineers in the execution of project related tasks and lead the engineering team through the entire solar project, from start to finish.

You will take the lead role regarding technical due diligence, design, and plan production reviews. These will include site layouts, horizontal and vertical control, grading and drainage, paving, site utilities, and associated civil engineering activities, constructability reviews, value engineering, and engineering studies, cost analysis, and reviews of as-built drawings for Erthos' projects.

You will provide technical support during the sales phase. Then take engineering ownership of the project during the design phase (performed by Erthos discipline engineers such as CE, EE, SE etc.) through the construction phase (with the actual work being performed by a third-party builder/installer). Your team will take site plans (electrical, civil, and structural created by the company's "solar architects" - discipline-specific engineers) and lead project engineers to ensure successful completion of the project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the engineering lead for the execution of solar projects and serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in an area of specialization that resolves problems of scope and complexity as needed.
  • Lead in the use of civil execution tools to ensure rapid, cost-effective project designs and permitting.
  • Be a key leader in technical discussions with investor engineers, lenders, and other key external stakeholders.
  • Perform hydrology and hydraulic studies, soil and stabilization designs.
  • Lead in system modeling studies of velocity, scour depths and flow depth using Flo2D or similar software.
  • Provide and validate grading plans, gravel road design and diversion channels.
  • Design and confirm site fencing, horizontal control, profiles, fastening and gate details.
  • Understand requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction of building codes, conditional use permits, and environmental regulations related to plant construction.
  • Conduct the technical review of materials provided by project owners (often in a data room) to evaluate for feasibility, exceptional requirements, and project economic viability.
  • Lead the engineering effort in the review of testing, commissioning plan and QA/QC documentation on site.
  • Communicate with engineers, suppliers and consultants to clarify scope of work, materials, and design requirements.
  • Oversee other project engineers in the execution of a portfolio of projects in development, design, or construction phases.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills
  • 10+ years' experience in the solar or renewable energy field is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D is critical and Flo2D
  • Ability to maintain and communicate internal operations timelines and requirements to project managers and general contractors
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that will allow you to clearly communicate on highly technical subjects to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Must be a team player and work collaboratively with other departments within Erthos
  • Passion for clean and renewable energy, and a commitment to quality and consistency

Compensation and Benefits
